A great piece by Helen Lewis (Deputy Editor at the New Statesman) on her reasons behind joining the Twitter silence today. It’s about time more people took notice of the abuse many people are facing on social media these days, as more simply needs to be done to protect people.

I really don’t think it should have taken this long for Twitter to realise it needs to offer users ways of reporting abusive behaviour. The sort of abuse that Caroline Criado-Perez and Stella Creasy, amongst others, have faced recently simply for airing their views is totally unacceptable. If such vile threatening behaviour went on in public, surely there’d be more quick action to stop this happening? In this modern day and age, why should it be so difficult to monitor and punish this type of behaviour when it happens online?
